Become an Intern

Apply to SIP

Join our group of interns and work on a professional team with an organization in the Indianapolis area. You'll work up to 15 hours per week during the school semester. You'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in an experience, choosing from a variety of positions offered every semester. This is also a great way to grow your professional network.

IU Indianapolis students are increasingly diverse across multiple identities, and SIP has a great opportunity and responsibility to ensure that future Indianapolis professionals represent the communities they serve. We particularly encourage students from underrepresented backgrounds to apply.

Program qualifications

Current freshman-level undergraduate students (under 30 credit hours) are eligible to apply for our program if they will reach sophomore-level credit hours (at least 30) the semester after they apply.

Current first-year undergraduate students are eligible to apply for our program the second semester of their first year at IU Indianapolis.

Current sophomore-level undergraduate students are eligible to apply for our program if they will not reach junior-level credit hours (more than 59) the semester after they apply.

Current second-year undergraduate students are eligible to apply for our program the first semester of their second year at IU Indianapolis.

This program is for IU Indianapolis undergraduate students only, and you must be enrolled as a full-time student (more than 12 credit hours per semester). Transfer students are eligible after completing at least one semester at IU Indianapolis.

We require a minimum GPA of 2.0.

Your coursework comes first, and we don't want to affect your grades. Beyond clearing the minimum requirement, there are no bonus points for higher GPAs. Transfer students must have an IU Indianapolis GPA.

You'll need to commit to 10–15 hours per week for working at an internship site.

Some sites are flexible, but you can expect to need about 10 hours a week, Monday through Friday, to gain the maximum benefit from your experience.

We do not have summer positions available.

We require that students must be a member of one or more priority groups:

  • Hispanic/Latino(a)
  • Black/African American
  • 21st Century award recipient
  • First-generation
  • Pell-eligible

About the application

Students interested in SIP must submit an application, much like any other job or internship. The application requires you to log in with your IU credentials. We strongly encourage students to work with the career services office in their school or the Office of Student Employment for the application process.

Our application is closed for fall 2024. You can sign up for more information for a reminder when the spring 2025 application opens. You can view the components of the application below to prepare in advance.

After you submit your application

After you apply to SIP, we'll send a timeline of when you can expect to hear back on next steps. We include very specific dates, so you don't need to follow up. We don't review applications until after the due date, and we'll tell you the date when you can expect to hear back. There's no need to follow up with us—we'll keep you posted!

If you submit an application and don't receive a confirmation email immediately, check the junk mail of the email address you included on the application. Still don't see it? Email us, and we'll confirm whether or not we have it.
